A Self Help Group (SHG) is a close-knit and self-governing collective of individuals who willingly unite to tackle shared social and economic obstacles. Within an SHG, members join forces to pool their resources, expertise, and abilities with the aim of enhancing their livelihoods and generating opportunities for personal growth. Anyone who shares the objectives and principles of an SHG can join, regardless of their gender, age, or background. SHGs often focus on empowering women and marginalized groups, but they can be open to all.

Joining an SHG offers numerous benefits, including access to financial services, skill development opportunities, increased income and economic independence, enhanced social support and networking, improved decision-making abilities, entrepreneurship and business growth prospects, and overall empowerment.

SHGs typically hold regular meetings, where members discuss issues, share experiences, and make collective decisions. They contribute regular savings to a common fund and can access credit from this fund. SHGs may also engage in income-generating activities or receive training and support to start businesses.

SHGs promote financial inclusion by encouraging members to save regularly and access microcredit from their collective fund. This enables members, especially those who lack access to formal financial institutions, to meet their financial needs, invest in income-generating activities, and build assets.

SHGs can engage in a wide range of activities, depending on the interests and needs of their members. Common activities include livestock rearing, agriculture, handicraft production, tailoring, small-scale businesses, and community development initiatives.

SHGs promote social empowerment by creating a platform for members to voice their concerns, share experiences, and support each other. Through regular interactions and collective decision-making, SHGs foster a sense of community, build self-confidence, and encourage leadership development.

Yes, SHGs can access external support and funding through government programs, non-governmental organizations, banks, and other institutions. These external resources can help strengthen SHGs by providing training, capacity building, technical assistance, and financial linkages.

While economic activities are a significant aspect of SHGs, they also address social issues. SHGs promote education, health, sanitation, and other community development initiatives. They often play a vital role in raising awareness about social issues and implementing solutions at the grassroots level.
